Animal Sciences Ambassadors

The Animal Sciences Ambassadors are a diverse group of students who represent our department to our future students, aid and design activities for our current students, and provide student representation to our alumni and guests.

Animal Sciences Ambassador, Mareah Volk
Mareah Volk

Mareah Volk

  • Graduation Year: 2018
  • Hometown: Newton, Illinois
  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Mareah is interested in beef cattle nutrition and plans to pursue a master’s degree in ruminant nutrition. She has been on the Meats Judging team and plans to participate on the Meat Animal Evaluation Team in the spring. She is a member of Sigma Alpha, a professional agricultural sorority and is a James Scholar.

  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Sierra is very interested in production animals, particularly dairy cattle and dairy science, global health, international animal agriculture, and animal reproduction.  After graduation, she intends to pursue a DVM or attend graduate school in one of the aforementioned areas-- preferably, she would enjoy a combination of veterinary medicine and research.  In her free time, she likes to foray into language learning, eat ice cream and drink bubble tea, and collect dairy cattle trinkets.  Please don't ever hesitate to contact her with any questions

Tessa Cowser

  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Tessa is a senior in Animal Sciences with plans to attend veterinary school. She is interested in large animal medicine and possibly public health and research. She has held an internship with Fair Oaks Farms in Indiana educating consumers about modern dairy and swine production. During her time at Illinois she has enjoyed opportunities such as studying abroad in Ireland, conducting a research project, being on the Meats Judging Team and leading in 4-H House Cooperative Sorority. 

Animal Sciences Ambassador Hayley Nagelburg

Hayley Nagelberg

  • Hometown: East Brunswick, New Jersey
  • Concentration: Technology & Management
  • Ambassador Bio: Hayley Nagelberg is a sophomore from New Jersey majoring in Animal Sciences and minoring in Social Work.  Her goal is to continue her education by attending school for Occupational Therapy.  She ultimately wants to use companion animals and farm animals as therapeutic aids for kids with special needs and veterans with PTSD. Her favorite thing about the Department of Animal Sciences is the extent of hands on animal experiences for every students to take part in.

  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Julie hails from Marissa, a rural town in Southern Illinois which has helped foster her love of large animals.  Eventually she would like to become a mixed practice veterinarian working in a small town.  Outside of the classroom she loves playing the piano, taking pictures, and hanging out with her husband and cat.  She loves country and punk music which she listens to while working on her research project at the U of I Vet Med.

  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Kristen Leuck is a Senior in Animal Sciences with a concentration of pre-veterinary medicine.  Kristen hopes continue her education at veterinary school upon graduation.  She hopes to combine her interests in livestock production and companion animal nutrition by becoming a mixed animal veterinarian.  Kristen is also a James Scholar student and a member of Sigma Alpha.

  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Meagan's goals are to attend veterinary school and study small animal medicine. She hopes to own her own clinic one day. Meagan also has an interest in meat science, which she developed while on the Meats Judging Team. She plans to explore that interest more as well, to see where that takes her.

Yolonda Bradshaw

  • Concentration: Companion Animal
  • Ambassador Bio: Yolonda is a Junior in our Animal Sciences department with a Companion Animal concentration. After graduation, she will continue her studies to obtain a Ph. D. in Animal Behavior in hopes of becoming a Certified Animal Behaviorist. Yolonda is very involved on campus, conducting her own research project in ERML's research lab and serving as a mentor for her peers just to name a few of her accomplishments.

Shelby Routh

  • Concentration: Large Animal Production/Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Shelby is Senior that plans to graduate this spring with a bachelors degree in Animal Science. She grew up showing and raising beef cattle and was fortunate enough to travel throughout the country showing cattle. Her goal after graduation is to obtain her veterinary technician license and land a job more so in the anesthesia side of things. Her favorite thing about the Animal Science department is the fact that everyone has the same goal for animals, but yet, there's such a variety of things students do to make a difference for the life of an animal. Shelby's very passionate about agriculture and would also like to continue her career in the livestock industry.

  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Hannah plans to attend veterinary school after graduation and study small animal medicine.  She hopes to one day own her own clinic.  Hannah is involved in Pre-Vet club on campus along with Campus Girl Scouts.  Hannah is a lifelong Girl Scout and earned her Girl Scout Gold Award.  Hannah is also a James Scholar.

  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Isabel Fleming is a Sophomore in Animal Sciences concentrating in Pre-Veterinary Medicine. She is from Peoria, Illinois and went to Richwoods High School. She hopes to attend Veterinary School after graduating from U of I and eventually open up her own clinic. She also hopes to some day expand her clinic to rescue animals along with her veterinary practice. Fun Fact: Her favorite animals are dogs, tigers, and sea turtles.

  • Ambassador Bio: Kelly is very interested in animal behavior, exotic animals, and wildlife conservation. She hopes to combine these interests by attending graduate school and pursuing a career in wildlife animal behavior. Kelly has developed these passions by completing internships at zoos and wildlife centers and she is currently volunteering at the Wildlife Medical Clinic on campus. Kelly is also involved in the Student Advancement Committee for the College of ACES and is minoring in Anthropology. Her favorite thing about the Animal Science Department is the broad range of essential opportunities and programs that it offers.

  • Hometown: Forest Park, Illinois
  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Hailey plans to pursue either a career as a wildlife veterinarian or a career as a wildlife animal behaviorist. Hailey has done internships at the Brookfield Zoo with Humboldt penguin behavior and local Champaign County Humane Society with companion animal behavior.  Hailey is involved in many clubs on campus including Pre-Vet Club and she is also the treasurer and ACES Council Rep for Teachers For Creatures. Hailey is also a James Scholar and is minoring in Integrative Biology.

  • Concentration: Pre-Veterinary Medicine
  • Ambassador Bio: Molly McGhee is a senior in Animal Sciences who initially was on the track toward vet school, but like many other animal science students, changed her career goals during her time in college. After graduation, she is planning on attending graduate school at U of I to study swine nutrition. Besides the ambassador team, she is involved with Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority, the Illini Dairy Club, and the Illini Equestrians. Her favorite thing about the College of ACES and the Department of Animal Sciences is the small community of faculty and students.
