Meat Science Scholarship

Background

Dr. Floyd McKeith, University of Illinois professor, is one of the world’s most influential scientists in the field of meat science. He served as a faculty member in the Department of Animal Sciences from 1981 until 2014. During that time, he advised scores of graduate students. Upon his retirement, he asked that any contributions to the department be “given to the students”. Therefore, the Meat Science Scholarship was established in his honor.

Selection Considerations

Students currently seeking or having completed an MS degree within the current academic year with an emphasis in meat science and muscle biology are eligible for this award. Students will be evaluated based on their research, teaching and extension activities including, but not limited to their publication record, completed and planned research, teaching activities, presentations at conferences and extension events and their potential to impact the meat animal industries. One $750 award will be made. Students may not win this award more than once.

Deadlines: The application deadline is February 15 of each year.

Application materials: Students should submit the following by email to Dr. Anna Dilger, adilger2@illinois.edu, by February 15th of each year:

  1. An up-to-date curriculum vitae for the nominee, including peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, other publications, awards, and research grants.
  2. A letter of application not to exceed 2 pages outlining the significance of your completed and proposed research and highlighting your experience in research, teaching and extension.

Recipients will be chosen by a panel of meat science faculty in the Department of Animal Sciences and of Illinois Meat Science alumni.
